Call for Workshops
The Information + 2027 Conference, an interdisciplinary conference for information design and data visualization, invites participatory workshop proposals from all relevant areas of professional practice, research, and pedagogy.
We welcome submissions engaging with Information Design and Data Visualization broadly conceived, across the social, physical, natural, logistical, and other dimensions through which data and information shape how we understand and act in the world. We are particularly interested in work that critically engages with societal stakes of data, visualization and emerging technologies and their infrastructures (including AI), examining how these practices shape, and are shaped by, questions of power, agency, authority and knowledge. We are especially drawn to workshops that challenge rhetorics of neutrality, determinism, rawness and bigness, treating data as situated, contingent and relational rather than given.
This call welcomes experimental ways of making data meaningful through arrangement, including creative and critical practices drawn from activism, journalism, the humanities, the arts and sciences, among others. Workshop topics can be about: data aesthetics, data or visual journalism, data sonification, cultural analytics, digital civics, digital humanities, environmental action, health information, historical collections and science communication.
Workshops can take many forms: playful, reflective, educational on existing or emerging topics, community-building, or discussion-driven through hands-on activities that complement the main track. We welcome a broad range of workshop formats relating to data, from tutorials that integrate new technologies into creative practice, to constructing data physical objects and interventions in the public space of the conference, to counterdata production strategies on contested public topics, and beyond.
We aim to select workshops that support interaction rather than passive listening. We are open to experimental and unconventional formats, but we expect workshops with a mature approach to critical data practices.
Workshops will run the day before the main conference track. Workshops should be planned for maximum 3 hours with attendance between 10 to 30 people, and we will curate them into morning or afternoon sessions offering options in parallel for participants to pick between. Exceptions will be considered based on their merits.
Proposals should include a short abstract of the workshop, its alignment to the conference theme, its duration and agenda, imagined outcomes, logistics (e.g. supplies and material needed, setting requirements etc..) and participants’ requirements.
Selection Process
The workshops will be selected through a curatorial process involving a dedicated expert team. The criteria for selection will include assessments of the feasibility, engagement with critical data practice, creativity and diversity, in order to create a balanced program with regards to content and representation.
Selection criteria
- Feasibility – to assess whether the workshop can be realistically and successfully implemented within the available time, classroom, technical resources, and operational constraints.
- Engagement with critical data practices – to assess how meaningfully the workshop engages participants in critical reflection on data, visualisation, and emerging technologies, particularly in relation to questions of power, agency, authority, and knowledge.
- Creativity and novelty – to assess the originality of the workshop in terms of its topic, methods, format, or approach, and its potential to bring forward emerging questions and debates.
- Diversity – to assess the diversity in the workshop’s topic, perspectives, approaches, and presenting team, particularly where this can broaden the range of voices and viewpoints represented in the programme.
- Overall quality – to assess the clarity, coherence, relevance, and overall strength of the proposal as a workshop contribution to Info+ 2027.
